The Old Chapel, Cheltenham

A former Victorian Methodist Chapel had been extended and converted in the 1970s into a family home. We were asked to completely remodel the property, looking into providing better use of space and upgrading the fabric of the building.

The main prayer space was previously largely unusable as habitable space. We sought to bring it to be the focus and hearth of the house, whilst keeping its integrity and many original features.

Bringing the kitchen, living and dining areas into the chapel spaces gave it new life. We proposed replacing an existing mezzanine with a new structure more sympathetically inserted in the space. On the upper level it incorporated a dining area, library wall and a ‘pulpit’ projection, reinterpreted as a defined study alcove off the mezzanine.
