RATIONALISING A DARK AND NARROW INTERIOR

This tired 1850s home required a full update. With the small existing footprint of the house, the cramped living space spread over the lower and upper ground floor lacked flow and fluidity. Our clients sought to improve on the quality of the internal accommodation by ‘opening up’ the floor plan and extending both on the lower ground floor, first floor and roof.

The two-storey extension built using reclaimed yellow London stock bricks, provided that much-needed additional space in the lower ground floor with an eat-in kitchen diner. The south elevation of the extension was substantially glazed to ensure that light levels to the interior of the plan were maintained as far as possible. Large glass doors provided a link between the internal and external living spaces. A roof terrace over the newly formed roof afforded the property additional external amenity space.

A new roof space formed with arched dormers in keeping with the local area offered an additional bedroom and a small office space.
