GOLDEN BEE ARTS CENTRE, OLD STREET

Reimagining a disused London pub as a vibrant new home for art and creativity.

Feasibility Study | Adaptive Reuse | Arts & Cultural Architecture | London

Through our own gallery, Sqft:Space, we have developed relationships with artists, curators and arts organisations, giving us a first-hand understanding of the spaces that creative communities need to thrive.

One such connection led to an exciting opportunity to explore the transformation of a disused pub on Old Street into a new arts centre for a London arts charity.

Our feasibility study investigates how the existing building could be creatively adapted and extended to accommodate a diverse programme of artistic activity, bringing new life to a redundant building while retaining its character and connection to the street.

The proposals envisage a lively ground-floor co-working and social space, retaining the former pub bar as a café and informal meeting point. Above, flexible artists' studios, workshops and maker spaces would provide affordable, adaptable environments for creative production, collaboration and experimentation.

Crowning the building, a striking new rooftop extension with a distinctive sawtooth roof would create a high-quality contemporary gallery and exhibition space. Designed to maximise natural light and offer a flexible setting for exhibitions and events, the new gallery would give the arts centre a strong architectural identity.

At the heart of the scheme is the ambition to create more than simply a collection of studios: a welcoming, accessible creative hub where artists can work, exhibit, collaborate and engage with the wider community.

The project reflects our belief in the potential of adaptive reuse to transform overlooked urban buildings into inspiring cultural destinations, combining the character of the existing architecture with ambitious contemporary interventions.
